Turn any picture into ASCII art
Drop a photo, paste a screenshot or turn on your webcam. Get character, block or braille art in mono or colour, then copy it or download it. Nothing is uploaded.
How it works
Characters
The picture is averaged into a grid, one cell per character. Each cell's brightness picks a character from the set: light cells get sparse characters such as ., dense cells get @. The grid's height is corrected for the shape of a character, so circles stay round.
Blocks
Each character holds two pixels, one above the other, using the half-block ▀. In colour, the top pixel is the text colour and the bottom one is the background, which doubles the vertical detail. Use it in a terminal with the ANSI download.
Braille
Each braille character is a 2×4 grid of dots, so it carries eight pixels. That makes it the sharpest text art there is. Move the dot threshold to add or remove ink, or turn on dithering for shading.
Tips
- For a chat app or a code comment, keep the width under about 80 characters and use Copy for chat, which wraps the art in a code block so spacing survives.
- Dark art on a light page and light art on a dark page need opposite mappings. Set Background to where the art will be read.
- Flat logos and line drawings read best with Sharpen edges up and dithering off. Photos read best with Floyd–Steinberg dithering.
- Your picture and webcam frames are processed on your device and never sent anywhere.
